RelRELIGIOUS AND RACIAL THEMES
The Argument I will make in my website is that Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” illustrates religion – specifically Christianity in America, and how it operates in a racist manner to oppress and perpetuate racism against black people. Racialized oppression is at epidemic levels in all aspects of American culture. My argument therefore will be that the way that religion and culture oppresses black people in America is illustrated through the ways in which the protagonist in the film “Get Out”, Chris Washington, is treated by the Armitage family, a family of white supremacists who befriend, brainwash and then murder black people, and sell them to white people for the highest bid, who then steal the bodies of the murdered black folks to live a type of “second life”. By situating my analysis of the film, in relation to religion and racism, within Rituals, Symbols and the idea of a “Sunken Place Theology”, a theology used both in the film literally and in society metaphorically, I can reveal these politically driven, racialized themes.
